Belmont Community Association, which operates from its fully accessible community centre, off Sunderland Road in Gilesgate Moor and works in partnership with Belmont Community School to provide sports facilities outside of school hours, has bid farewell to its two longest serving members of the Management Committee.
Alex Wilson, a former head teacher of Belmont Community School, has served as President of the Association for the last 31 years. Anita Steven, who recently retired from teaching at the same school, acted as a liaison between the Association and School for over two decades.
Chair of BCA, Bill Moir, says “Alex was the first Head Teacher at Belmont Community School and in many ways he encouraged the development of a school truly connected to the community – he continued to support the organisation as its first President – a post he held for 31 years. He appointed Anita as a member of his PE staff following her teaching course at Nevilles Cross College in 1976– they are both sportsmen and have been good sports who have given the Association many years of support and advice.”
A presentation evening was held in recognition of the long service that individuals gave to Belmont Community Association.
Belmont Community Centre has an ongoing modernisation programme and now boasts a new and extended kitchen, refurbished washrooms, modern furniture and wi-fi, with a welcoming exterior and large car park.
